Adolf Hitler Part Two

Power Seized, Democracy Dismantled

What began in the backrooms of beer halls exploded into a full assault on Germany's democracy. Hitler wasn’t just seizing power, he was rewriting the rules.

The Beer Hall That Boiled Over

It was November 8, 1923. The smell of beer, cigars, and stale sweat hung thick in the air at the Bürgerbräukeller in Munich. Germany was wounded, crippled by hyperinflation, political chaos, and the humiliation of Versailles. The country was starving for answers.

That night, Adolf Hitler stormed into the beer hall, fired a pistol in the air, and declared the government overthrown. His goal?, To replicate Mussolini’s “March on Rome” in Germany. He would begin in Bavaria, seize control, and march on Berlin.

The Beer Hall Putsch, as it became known, was poorly planned. Local police resisted, shots were fired, sixteen Nazis and four policemen were killed.

Hitler fled, was arrested two days later, and charged with high treason.

Prison Bars and Paper Power

But in defeat, Hitler found a new stage. His trial was broadcast across Germany. Instead of shame, he gained a platform and sympathy.

“I alone bear the responsibility,” he declared proudly in court. His sentence?, Just five years in prison, of which he served nine months and those months changed everything.

In a quiet cell at Landsberg Prison, Hitler dictated the book that would spread his hatred and blueprint for conquest, Mein Kampf (My Struggle). It was a rambling mix of autobiography, nationalism, anti-Semitism, and plans for a racially “pure” empire. Most dismissed it as the rant of a failed extremist but the words would one day be enforced with fire and steel.

A New Strategy: Play the Game, Then Change It

After his release, Hitler was no longer interested in rebellion. He would take Germany legally and then destroy the legal system behind him.

The Weimar Republic, Germany’s fragile democracy, was cracking under pressure: massive unemployment, communist uprisings and a desperate population

By 1930, the Nazi Party had grown from a fringe group into a serious political force. and later in 1932, Hitler ran for president against Paul von Hindenburg. He lost but his campaign electrified the country.

The Nazis became the largest party in the Reichstag (Germany’s parliament). Hindenburg, hoping to control him, made Hitler Chancellor of Germany in January 1933. It was a colossal mistake.

The Fire That Burned a Republic

Just a month later, on February 27, 1933, the Reichstag building went up in flames, a Dutch communist was blamed but many believed the Nazis orchestrated it.

Hitler used the fire as a pretext to demand emergency powers, he convinced Hindenburg to sign the Reichstag Fire Decree, suspending civil liberties and allowing the arrest of political opponents especially Communists.

Weeks later, Hitler passed the Enabling Act, effectively giving him dictatorial control. Germany was still calling itself a democracy but the truth was already marching under black boots.

The Night of the Long Knives

Even inside the Nazi ranks, Hitler saw threats. The SA (Stormtroopers), led by Ernst Röhm, had grown powerful and unruly. In June 1934, Hitler ordered a purge. Over 85 people were executed, including Röhm, in what became known as the Night of the Long Knives.

The message was clear: Obey, or be erased.

When President Hindenburg died two months later, Hitler merged the roles of Chancellor and President. He called himself Führer: leader of the German Reich.

A Dictator Crowned by Applause

He didn’t seize the throne, he was handed it. By fear, nationalism and by silence.

The rest of the world, still reeling from the Great War, barely stirred.
